Bangkok River Taxi Boats of Khlong Saen Saep Express

A quick and very cheap way to get around Bangkok, Thailand during the daytime are the Khlong Saen Saep Express boats.

Unlike your hometown’s overpriced and sometimes dangerous transit system, riding the rivers here is fun and extremely quick. You either catch on or you wait for the next boat!

We jumped on the Golden Mount Line at Pratunam and rode to the end at Panfa Leelard only to ride back since there were still ongoing protest in the area we planned to wander.

More information about visiting Bangkok’s Baan Silapin (บ้านศิลปิน):

Baan Silapin (บ้านศิลปิน), also known as Bangkok’s Artist’s House or Baan Khlong Bang Luang, is a two hundred year old wooden home in the city. It’s located across the Chao Phraya river from much of downtown Bangkok, in an area known as Thonburi, right along one of the main canals. Arriving to Baan Silapin (บ้านศิลปิน) is a real throwback in time, it feels like you’re far removed from the chaos and clutter of Bangkok and back to how the city was when it first started to be settled and developed. The only reason you know you’re still in Bangkok is the obnoxious thundering longtail boats that zoom past every few minutes. The Artist’s House is along one of the main tour canals, so it does have a lot of boat traffic – but it’s still a great place to visit.

So we arrived to Baan Silapin (บ้านศิลปิน) in the early afternoon and after walking around a few of the shops, we then went straight to Bangkok Artist’s House and decided to grab lunch. Khao gaeng, or a variety of Thai curries and prepared dishes was on the menu. I chose a bowl mushroom coconut milk curry, bitter melon stuffed with pork, a fried mackerel fish and omelet served with shrimp paste hot sauce, and a plate of rice topped with a fried egg. Sitting on the side of the house with a view of the canal was a memorable way to enjoy a feast. The food was good and the view was excellent.

At 2 pm each day except Wednesday (and occasional off days when the dancers get hired off site for a private event) there’s traditional Thai puppet show. The show is one of the main reasons to visit Baan Silapin (บ้านศิลปิน) in Bangkok. The performance was very well done and the puppets depicted a story from Hanuman. I was impressed and I would highly recommend the show to anyone who visits Bangkok.

After the Thai traditional puppet show, we had a coffee and sat relaxing at Baan Silapin (บ้านศิลปิน) for a few more minutes before heading back to the road and catching a taxi home. Bangkok Artist’s House is still an off the beaten track attraction to explore in Bangkok. It’s a nicely preserved home and a real fun activity when you visit!

Address: 315 Wat Tong Salangam, Phet Kasem 28, Thanon Phet Kasem, Pa Si Charoen, Bangkok, Thailand 10160
Open Hours: 9 am – 6 pm daily (but no puppet show on Wednesdays, also call ahead to confirm the puppet show)
Phone: 02-868-5279, 089-125-3949 , 081-258-9260
How to get there: If you don’t take a longtail boat from the Chao Phraya, the best way to get there is by taking a taxi to Charoen Sanitwong Soi 3. Go all the way to end of the road at the 7-Eleven. Then walk across the footbridge, make a left, and you’ll be at Baan Silapin in just a few minutes.
Thai Directions (for Taxi):
จรัญสนิทวงศ์ ซอย.3 เข้าซอยไปสุดซอยจะเจอ 7-11 ลงหน้าเซเว่น เดินเข้าไปในซอยข้างเซเว่น แล้วเดินข้ามสะพานข้ามคลอง แล้วเลี้ยวซ้าย

FREE EBOOKLET Khlong Toey was the first market we visited the first time we came to Bangkok. It’s an authentic produce market experience. People sell in bulk to normal shoppers as well as restaurants!

It’s a huge market with not only fruits and vegetables, but also meat and other items. The area we’re interested in (fruit) spans about 100 meters with stuffed market stalls! You can find anything here, as long as it is in season somewhere in Thailand. Even Durian is available year round!

Bangkok is still a city, and getting high quality produce is pretty difficult. All is streamlined and there is a high turnover, so it’s even difficult to find ripe fruit! If you want super quality, you have to get out of Bangkok and go to a place like Chanthaburi or even some of the Islands.

There’s many markets in Bangkok, but Khlong Toey is the one we keep going back to time and time again because of it’s closeness to the city center. It’s also close to Lumphini park, which is a great place to bring your newly bought durian for lunch 🙂

Snakehead Fish at Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market – Bangkok Day 4

On Day 4 of this 2 Weeks In Bangkok video guide series we went to Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม), which is one of my favorite floating markets in Bangkok – for the food and atmosphere.

00:37 Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม) – When it comes to floating markets in Bangkok, and there are quite a few of them, Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม) is one of my personal favorites. I love it for the variety and abundance of delicious food, and for the great lush and green atmosphere. Even though it’s still located in Bangkok, the market feels like you’re far removed, and it doesn’t feel like you’re so close to the city. There is a lot of delicious food to eat at the floating market, but one of my favorite things to eat, and something you shouldn’t miss either, is pla chon pao (ปลาช่อนเผา), which is a grilled snakehead fish. Despite it looking a little on the scary side, it’s really an awesome fish, similar in taste to a catfish, but more meaty and not quite as rubbery. It was a really good snakehead fish at the floating market this time – cooked so it was nice and moist. We also ate a plate of goong ob woon sen (กุ้งอบวุ้นเส้น), another excellent Thai seafood dish of mung bean noodles and big freshwater shrimp cooked in a personal pot. After having lunch at the floating market, we then decided to take a boat ride tour, which just costs 50 THB per person, which is a great deal. The boat ride tour was actually quite entertaining and was definitely worth it. If you go to Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม), I’d highly recommend the boat tour along with all the delicious food.

16:35 Dinner at Saw Nah Wang (ร้าน ส.หน้าวัง) – After getting back to our hotel near Khao San road, we took a little rest and then headed out for dinner to a restaurant called Saw Nah Wang (ร้าน ส.หน้าวัง). The main dish to eat at this restaurant is pad mee krached ruam (ผัดหมี่กระเฉดรวม), stir fried rice noodles with water mimosa. They make it so well, and it’s always delicious – especially if you like stir fried noodles, it’s a great dish.

16:34 Saphan Phut Market (สะพานพุทธ) – After going to the floating market in the morning, we decided to continue the Bangkok markets at night and we headed to Saphan Phut Market (สะพานพุทธ), which is a Thai youth clothing and hang out market. The market is always lively at night, and tonight was no different. There’s not a lot to do there, but if you’re interested in Thai youth culture, it’s a good place to visit.

21:00 Pak Khlong Talad (ปากคลองตลาด) – Known in Thai as Pak Khlong Talad (ปากคลองตลาด), or as the flower market Bangkok, it’s a giant flower distribution market that’s open 24 hours a day in Bangkok. But the best time to go is at night, and even the best time in around midnight to 3 am or so when the market is at its busiest. We got there around 10 pm and there were still plenty of flowers to see, and it was a good last stop of the night.

Day 4, visiting Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม) and eating the snakehead fish, as well as visiting a few other local markets in Bangkok, was another fun day in Bangkok.
