There’s more to Thailand than satay, elephants, Buddhism and rice. All the flavours, arts, culture and exotic atmosphere of Thailand will be on show at Darling Harbour on 9 and 10 March for the Thailand Grand Festival 2013. And you can even win flights to Thailand.
Darling Harbour is home to a large number of cultural festivals and none is more colourful and lively than the Thailand Grand Festival. This is the festival’s fourth year and it continues to go from strength to strength. More than 60,000 people are expected to attend across the two days of the festival, so if you don’t like crowds this probably isn’t the place for you. But if you enjoy happy, festive, cultural events then come along to the party. Songkran, a traditional water festival, is this year’s theme, which seems very topical given our recent weather.
With the huge range of Thai food on offer, wander the hip Thai markets, find out how to cook delicious Thai delicacies at the Thai cooking demonstrations or be totally relaxed with a Thai massage. The Thai Masterchef finals will also be held and the winner crowned.
Hands On Activities
Each of Thailand’s regions will be represented with its own tent. You can make your own Thai leaf ornament at the Central Thailand tent, view intricate masks at the North-East Thailand tent, participate in traditional arts and crafts at the Northern Thailand tent, and make your own puppet at the South Thailand tent,
Thai Cultural Demonstrations and Displays
Everybody loves Thai food but the festival is your opportunity to really savour all that Thai culture and community has to offer. The real highlights will be the cultural demonstrations, which range from sport to dance and puppetry. See dynamic and fast-paced martial arts like Muay Thai or Krabi Krabomg or the ball sport Tra Kraw Wong, as well as traditional sword and stick fighting. Watch the quick and lively Pong Larng dance or the drum dance, Klong Yao, and don’t forget the catch the beauty of traditional puppet Theatre with the Joe Louis Traditional Thai Puppet show.
